about

The first Plunderers release.

Tracks 1-13 recorded on Saturday 24th August 1985 at the ANU Union Bar (upstairs), Acton. Tracks 14-18 recorded on Friday 26th July 1985 at Cafe Jax, Civic (actually Saturday 27th as it was definitely after midnight).

Stevie Plunder: vocals, guitar
Nic Dalton: vocals, bass, keyboard on "What Goes On"
Peter Velzen: vocals, drums

with
Bradley Barnett: lead vocals on "Cold Turkey"

100 cassettes released early 1986. Transferred and mastered by Tim Kevin at Tempe River Studio, Marrickville 2017.

We put out a live cassette called Hot August Knights - eighteen songs taken from two live shows at the Uni Bar and Café Jax. I can’t remember what it was recorded on or who recorded it, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a Tascam 244 and it was either Pete or Ben Whitten who had organised the recording. We stripped out all our own songs and were left with the standards that the crowds loved at this time: three Velvet Underground songs, Purple Haze, I Want Candy, the Banana Splits and the Roadrunner themes, Modern Lovers, Bowie’s “Queen Bitch”, even the Bay City Rollers’ “Bye Bye Baby” and Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll”. The most obscure song was "Zip Nolan" by The Cult Figures, which ex-Plunderer (and Young Docteur) Marcus Flux had introduced to the band. We weren’t directionless. This was our direction: Fun. - Nic

Stevie: I’m really into the Plunderers music, basically because it’s partly mine and Nic’s and we’re very happy with that. And it’s just a lot more of a better feeling for me.

Julia: What can we expect from you at Café Jax tomorrow afternoon?

Stevie: Oh well, you can expect a basically fun, happy time and good music. We’re a happy band and we like to have a lot of fun when we do things.
- interview with Julia Nielson, 2XX

Success to us at this time was a packed Uni Bar with everyone dancing from the front to the back. And everyone getting totally smashed. When the audience looked up on the stage and saw us there, getting as drunk and high as them, but playing loud, tight rock and roll with Stevie’s irreverent chicken squawk flailing over the top, we were all on the trip together. - Nic

“You boys represent the drug crazed youth of Canberra.”
- Bernie Hayes (from the Plunderers diary)
